CERT & Business Continuity Volunteers Gather for New Sustainable Preparedness Pilot
Inviting CERT & Business Continuity Volunteers to New Preparedness Pilot
When emergencies hit, it’s not just people who need coordinated support. For many communities, large animals - horses, cattle, goats and more - are deeply tied to livelihoods, land use, and emotional wellbeing. Planning for them isn’t “extra,” it’s core to real preparedness.
I’ve been working on a Makebooks-powered pilot that turns detailed CERT best practices into interactive, role-based playbooks tailored for the people who actually show up: business continuity teams and CERT volunteers.
One of our first examples is a CERT Program for Large Animal Handling playbook, which lays out clear roles and responsibilities, risk assessment, communication strategies, animal behavior, safe handling techniques, and local resource & volunteering pathways.
It includes structured roles like Animal Rescue Coordinator, Animal Behavior Specialist, Volunteer Coordinator, Training Coordinator, CERT Leader and more, all mapped to concrete responsibilities, drills, and local integration.
The next step is to gather together to build this out together:
Adapt these structures to your local risks and resource realities
Co-design checklists, decision trees, and drills that work for your teams
Capture local resource directories and volunteer pathways inside the playbook itself
Align animal-focused operations with your broader business continuity and CERT activation plans
I’m looking for Business Continuity, Emergency Management, and CERT volunteers who want to join a small pilot group to provide real world feedback and refine these Makebooks-based playbooks and shape versions that can be reused and shared across communities.
If this speaks to your work, I’d love to collaborate on the next iteration. Comment, DM, or reach out and let’s explore how we can turn real-world CERT experience into reusable, living playbooks that keep both people and animals safer.
